Outbound Voice Geo Permissions

Telecom fraud is on the rise across the globe. At Plivo, we have been busy building safeguards to protect our customers from abuse. We are happy to announce the release of two important features designed to combat fraud.

Outbound Voice Call Geo-Preferences

One way to protect your Plivo account from fraud is to restrict the set of countries that can be called from it.

Let’s say that you intend to place calls to numbers in North America only. By disabling call routes to all other continents you reduce the risk of fraud tremendously.

Similarly, if you are running an inbound call center, or your use case does not involve outbound calling to PSTN numbers, you may block routes to all countries as a precautionary measure.

To manage your geo preferences, head to the Voice Geo Permissions screen on your Plivo console.

Your preferences come in effect instantly and are applied to all calls initiated via Rest API and Dial XML.

API calls to blocked countries will be rejected with HTTP response code 403 and the error message "Calls to this destination country are barred.".

Calls initiated with Dial XML will dropped automatically. The hangup cause (in CDR) for such calls will be set to "Destination Country Barred" (Code 2030). Learn more about Plivo hangup causes here.

Calling Premium Numbers

Premium numbers are highly susceptible to International Revenue Share Fraud (IRSF), also known as Toll Fraud.

Blocking calls to premium numbers is highly recommended if your use case does not involve calling such numbers.

You can enter your preferences with respect to premium rate numbers on the Voice Geo Permissions page on your Plivo console.

Enabling this feature will block calls to premium numbers across all countries.

These preferences also apply to calls initiated from Sub-Accounts, unless the preferences have been overridden for the Sub-Account.

Overriding Preferences For Specific Sub-Accounts

Geo and premium number preferences can also be overridden at sub-account level.

Default preferences apply to all calls initiated from the main account and all sub-accounts unless they have been explicitly overridden for the sub-account.

To specify preferences for a sub-account, simply select the sub-account from the Accounts dropdown, key in the preferences and hit save.
